World No Tobacco Day 2018

World No Tobacco Day 2018

Because our mission here at Halo is to save lives from smoking, May 31 is a significant day to us. Every year, that date is recognized as World No Tobacco Day, a day sponsored by the World Health Organization to focus on the health risks of smoking and ways to reduce the amount of people who use it. Smoking has a really negative impact on heart health, so the theme for World No Tobacco Day this year is “Tobacco and Heart Disease.”

The WHO says cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, and that smoking and second-hand smoke are the reason for around 12% of those deaths. Also, after high blood pressure, smoking is the second cause of cardiovascular diseases worldwide. More than 7 million people die every year from smoking and about 900,000 of those people are non-smokers affected by second-hand smoke.

The goal for World No Tobacco Day 2018 is to spread the word about the link between smoking and heart diseases like coronary heart disease and stroke, increase public awareness of how second-hand smoke can affect heart health, and to encourage the public and government officials to make the decision to protect others from smoking. The WHO also wants to use today to motivate countries to apply the MPOWER tobacco control measures it created, which include:

  • Monitoring tobacco prevention policies
  • Protecting people from smoking by promoting smoke-free public places
  • Offering people help to quit smoking
  • Warning cigarette users about its health risks by putting graphics on packaging
  • Enforcing bans on cigarette ads
  • Raising taxes on tobacco products

If you have a friend or loved one who would like to make the transition from smoking to vaping, you can refer them to Halo and give them the coupon code NOTOBACCO, which gets them a Gusto Mini Starter Kit for $1.
