Rookie to RDTA: Know Your Vaping Devices

There are a growing number of types of vaping hardware out there. And while choice is a good thing, it can also become confusing or overwhelming. This article will give you some direction as to where to get started, or where to go next, in your vaping journey.

Cig-a-Likes: A New Take on an Old Product

Many smokers and former smokers love the “cig-a-like” or e-cigarette. Why? It looks and functions very similarly to traditional combustible tobacco products, without the combustible aspect. No flame, no smoke, no ash, etc. A smoker may use one of these with a tobacco-flavored e-liquid (containing no actual tobacco) and their preferred nicotine level to replicate the smoking experience. Vaping may be more socially acceptable or, in their view, preferable to the unquestionable downsides of tobacco cigarettes.

Using a cig-a-like is a very simple undertaking. It’s an entry-level device that’s user friendly. Plug and play, if you will.

Vape Pen Panache

Vape pens are an intermediate level of vaping hardware. Some assembly is required, and you must refill the tank regularly. There are also coils to replace. These devices can give a far more satisfying vape, but do require modest effort and care to deliver it. Their compact pen-like design makes them easy to take with you.

Sub-Ohm Satisfaction

With a variety of customizable settings and the ability to create tremendous amounts of vapor, or clouds, sub-ohm mods are clearly made for the vaping aficionado.

Some devices provide convenience features that enable you to adjust the wattage simply by twisting a dial at the bottom of the device. Others feature LED screens that show you how many watts/ohms you’re using, remaining battery life, when the device is overheating, and more.

For sub-ohm devices, high-vegetable glycerin (VG) e-liquids generally provide the most satisfying vaping experience with the greatest vapor production.

Straddling the Line

Some vape pens are also available in sub-ohm models. Halo’s smallest sub-ohm device provides vapor production and flavor unmatched in a typical vape pen.

RDTA: Do-It-Yourself Vaping Pleasure

There is a class of vapers who prefer building sections of their own devices. The rebuildable dripping tank atomizer, or RDTA, is made for these do-it-yourselfers. Devices such as these typically feature a rebuildable deck, and enable the user to customize the tank’s construction. Most RDTAs will work with common mod batteries.

Don’t Bite off More Than You Can Vape

Whether you’re looking to transition into vaping, or move up to hardware that enables you to vape the way you want to vape, you’ll find no shortage of choices. Talk to vaper friends about what kind they use. Don’t “bite off more than you can chew,” — i.e., pick a device that’s too powerful for your needs — but also don’t be afraid to try something new. Remember, what’s fine for you today may not be tomorrow.
