How to Pick Your Nicotine Level: A New Vaper’s Guide

In case we haven’t already made it clear, we’re here to save lives — a billion of them. That’s the current estimated number of cigarette smokers in the world. Sometimes our passion causes us to be very blunt about this mission. We make no apologies.

As FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., has stated: “The overwhelming amount of the death and disease attributable to tobacco is caused by addiction to cigarettes. Addiction causes long-term sustained use. But it’s exposure to the harmful chemicals that cause disease. Cigarettes are the only legal consumer product that, when used as intended, will kill half of all long-term users.”

If you’re a smoker and are trying to quit, vaping enables you to get your nicotine without those “harmful chemicals” Dr. Gottlieb mentioned. But if you’re used to smoking tobacco, how can you find the right level of nicotine for you when you make the transition to vaping e-liquid?

We’re here to help.

Nicotine Strengths: 24mg/ml to 0mg/ml
Halo offers all of its e-liquids, including customer favorites Tribeca, SubZero, Kringle’s Curse, and Turkish Tobacco in a variety of nicotine strengths to suit your needs and taste. But you won’t find these numbers on the outside of a cigarette pack, so what do they really mean? Read on!

Although exceptionally rare, there are instances of up to 48mg/ml e-liquids, but generally, 24mg/ml is the highest nicotine level you will readily find. This strength is suitable for tobacco smokers who consume multiple packs or in excess of 40 unfiltered/full-flavored cigarettes a day. (NOTE: Halo offers a 36mg/ml unflavored liquid that is most commonly used by experienced vapers who want to customize the strength of their e-liquid.)

Here we encounter the most common class of e-liquids, where the lion’s share of tobacco smokers begin their vaping odyssey and many existing vapers find their “nicotine comfort zone.” If you smoke 10 to 30 full-flavored or regular blended cigarettes per day, and prefer a medium throat hit, we suggest vaping with an 18mg/ml e-liquid. It’s also common for vapers to eventually taper down from 18mg/ml to lower nicotine strength.

We suggest this level as an entry level to those who smoke around a half-pack of cigarettes a day. It delivers a good balance of flavor and vapor production with a mild throat hit.

If you’re not a heavy smoker, under a half-pack of cigarettes per day, we recommend a 6mg/ml e-liquid.

What used to be thought of as the ideal strength for those who drip their e-liquid, 3mg/ml has become increasingly common with the influx of powerful sub-ohm devices. If you prefer ultra-light tobacco, we recommend beginning at 3mg/ml.

Just a few years ago, if you asked for 1.5mg/ml you would most likely be walking out of the vape shop empty-handed. With the increased popularity of vaping, and this being an industry based on personal preference, vapers who weren’t ready to drop from 3mg/ml to 0mg/ml demanded a happy medium. This level offers supreme flavor and vapor production with an almost non-existent throat hit.

E-liquid doesn’t have to have any nicotine; it’s the ideal option to wean off nicotine for those who prefer it. Some just enjoy the many e-liquid flavors themselves. An e-liquid containing zero nicotine offers optimal flavor and vapor production, but typically has no throat hit. This presents a perfect opportunity for e-liquid sampling/testing. The absence of nicotine allows the user to experience the true essence of flavor and end their nicotine dependence. In addition, vapers who have tried to cut down their nicotine use can still enjoy their favorite e-juices.

We hope this nicotine tutorial helps make your switch to e-cigarettes a smooth one. That change might well be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.
