How to Correctly Switch Flavors in Your Tank
There are different approaches to changing your E-liquid flavor. Some people are fine vaping the same flavor for long periods of time, in which case they can plan to switch their E-liquid when they replace their coils or even tanks. Others may need to change it up throughout the day, swapping out one flavor for another as a way of adding variety. We’re going to cover the correct way to swap out an E-liquid and also provide tips for those who like to change flavors more often.
Clean Your Tank
The first step in changing flavors is cleaning your tank. While it may be easy to just wait until one flavor is nearly gone before refilling it with the next, the transitioning taste—dubbed ghost flavors—can vary from doable to nearly unbearable. This is why cleaning your tank is the best way to prevent your old flavor from mixing with the new one.
- Unscrew the tank from the battery.
- Remove the coil head from the tank.
- Give the tank a quick rinse under a water faucet.
- Shake out any excess water and let it air out for a few minutes.
Normally, soap could leave an unpleasant taste in your tank, but you can use it on stubborn flavors. Just make sure you scrub well to get all the soap out. A better alternative to soap is soaking your tank in some cheap vodka for an hour and then rinsing it out. If you want to take it a step further, you can buy an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner for around $35. Just make sure you don’t wash your coil head with any type of cleaner.
It’s not always easy to clean out your tank, especially when you’re on the go or at work. In many cases, it’s not necessary to clean your tank unless you’re vaping a strong flavor like menthol, cinnamon or coffee. Those flavors will stick around in your tank and coil heads for a long time.
Change or Clean Your Coil Heads
Along with cleaning your tank, changing your coil is also considered best practice, but if you like to change flavors often, the process can become expensive.
An alternative is to clean your coils. You can rinse your coil heads under hot water, but you have to let them dry out completely before using them again, which can take one or two days. If you have backup coils, this won’t be a problem. You can easily swap them out as you wait for the other coils to dry and become usable again.
If you can’t get the old flavor out of your coil head with a water rinse, some people recommend soaking it in vodka or 151-grain alcohol for a few minutes to an hour. After soaking, rinse it out with hot water and let it dry thoroughly.
Switching Flavors Often
The following tips are for people who want to switch out flavors more often.
Don’t Fill Up Your Tank All The Way
If you like to switch flavors often, try putting less E-liquid in your tank. Two milliliters is a good amount for large tanks; it will wick nicely but still won’t last too long. This means you can get a great vape and move on to another flavor quickly.
Use a Smaller Tank
If you like to switch out flavors often, a smaller tank will allow you to get better performance out of as little as a milliliter of E-liquid. A smaller tank is designed to provide better performance and flavor with less E-liquid. In a five-milliliter tank, two milliliters of E-liquid might barely reach the top of the wicking holes of your coil. On the other hand, in a 3.5 mL tank, two milliliters will completely saturate your coil heads.
Use Multiple Tanks
This is may be the preferred method for people who change vapes throughout the day. By keeping a few tanks on hand with different flavors, you can switch back and forth in seconds. The biggest drawback is the initial investment in multiple tanks.
Use Unflavored E-Liquid
If you don’t want to change coils but you want to get the old flavor out of your tank, try an unflavored E-liquid, like Halo Fusion. When trying this, you’ll want to vape your tank till it’s nearly empty, add one or two milliliters of Fusion, vape that until the old flavor is gone, and then add in your new E-liquid.
Buy an RDA
If you’re looking for a way to switch flavors on the fly, you might want to look into picking up a rebuildable dripping atomizer (RDA). Most RDAs hold only 5–15 hits of E-juice, making it easy to move to new flavors as the wick dries out. The biggest drawbacks to using an RDA as opposed to a tank is that they require a lot more maintenance. You have to build and wick your own coils, and the atomizer can leak easily.
What Do You Prefer?
Changing flavors in a tank doesn’t have to be confusing. You can do nothing and just refill your tank with whatever flavor you want when it gets close to empty. For the best vape with no mix of flavors, however, cleaning out your tank and changing coil heads is your best option.
