Halo Retailer Spotlight: The Vapor Emporium of New Market, MD

Elmer Bailey, owner of The Vapor Emporium, credits his sister-in-law with inspiring him to open his own vape shop …

Halo: How long have you been in business?

Elmer: We opened our shop here in the small town of New Market, Maryland in February of 2013. I believe we were the first full-service vape shop in Maryland. It was a very new and relatively unknown business here on the East Coast. We opened with only three lines of e-liquids, Halo being one of them, and (it) still is today.

Halo: Where did the name Vapor Emporium come from?

Elmer: Our name comes from my sister-in-law, Deana Kirkpatrick, who founded the company a couple of years earlier in Idaho. Basically, to convey that we were offering all things vapor-related.

Halo: Do you have more than one location?

Elmer: Although we share the same name, our Maryland store is a little different in range and scope than our sister stores in Idaho. In all, there are three Vapor Emporiums — one in Maryland, and the two Deana opened in Idaho.

Halo: Why did you start selling vape products?

Elmer: I owe my sister-in-law a debt of gratitude for getting us in the industry. She began the business seeing the opportunity and benefit of helping others, and my wife and myself, to make the switch to an alternative. I know the FDA has issues with that statement, but we have all experienced firsthand the benefits ourselves.

Halo: What do you like best about selling vape products?

Elmer: The VERY BEST thing about this business is the smile and gratitude we get from those that have made the switch.

Halo: What’s special about Vapor Emporium?

Elmer: Our mission starting up and still is today, is to provide the BEST in customer service and selection. We try to provide a large selection of products, something for everyone, that fits their needs and wants. Whether it be a beginner or advanced vaper, we strive to provide the best for each customer, and again, customer satisfaction is number one priority. We just had the honor of being voted our county’s Best Vape Shop by the local newspaper. We consider this to be quite an honor and achievement with the proliferation of shops over the last few years.

Halo: What’s your customers’ favorite Halo flavor?

Elmer: Top Halo flavors (are) Tribeca and Turkish. CoolMist and Mystic tie for third. (These) are consistently the top movers. Halo’s tobacco and menthols are always a go-to when looking for a flavor in those categories.

Halo: What’s the first or most common question customers ask you?

Elmer: (laughs) The most common question, “Do you vape?” “What do you vape?” “What’s the best flavor?” “How is it versus cigarettes?” The answer to last question is becoming more common knowledge with improved education and awareness, despite the FDA’s best efforts to keep us silenced. But, at least the U.K. knows the correct answer. (laughs)

Halo: How long have you been vaping?

Elmer: I have been vaping for almost four years since my first pen and tank that my sister-in-law set us up with. My, how times have changed, but those are still great working styles for beginners and advanced vapers.

Halo: What does vaping mean to you?

Elmer: Vaping has evolved into more than just an alternative to combustibles, but has also become a lifestyle, and even a hobby for some. It has created a lot of new and innovative devices and choices for customers.

Halo: Do you think the public has misconceptions about vaping?

Elmer: Yes, there are STILL many misconceptions regarding vaping. Some of my favorites, “Doesn’t that stuff fill your lungs with water?” You mean like a nice, steamy shower does? Or, “Don’t those things blow up?” No, with proper use, care, and safety precautions, I guess the new Galaxy 7 or Hoverboard you bought your kids last Christmas is also dangerous. (laughs) This is why B&Ms (brick and mortar stores) have a responsibility to educate, serve, and advocate, to teach the public.

The Vapor Emporium is located at 11717 Old National Pike #3b, in New Market, Maryland.
