Halo Retailer Spotlight: It’s a Dream Smoke Shop of Kansas City, MO

Josh Funk has loved visiting It’s a Dream Smoke Shop since he was old enough to be a customer. Now he’s running the place as its manager …

Halo: How long have you been in business?

Josh: Seven years.

Halo: Where did your store name come from?

Josh: The reason why we call our shop “It’s a Dream” is because it’s like coming into a dream. We’ve got pretty much anything you could want. We’ve got the best of the best, and that’s why we chose to go through Halo, because you guys are rated one of the best, and that’s what we like to provide for our customers.

We always do crazy deals, bundle deals, sales. We’ll knock the price off here and there. And so people LOVE coming here. We’ve got a spinning wheel. We’ve got raffles going all the time. So it’s kind of like, It’s a Dream is just the perfect place for you to come.

Halo: Do you have more than one It’s a Dream location?

Josh: We do have another location down the street. It’s a lot smaller, though. It’s kind of more like our hookah shop.

Halo: Why did you start selling vape products?

Josh: Vaping actually helped me personally quit smoking cigarettes, and so I really wanted to be able to educate people, because there’s a lot of misconceptions about vapes going around. It’s kind of my hobby. It’s part of the culture that I’m in. Plus, I love this shop. (laughs) I just turned 24, but I’ve been coming here since I was 18, and eventually I was like, “Why don’t I just work here?” I started working here, then I became the manager.

Halo: What do you like best about selling vape products?

Josh: I love the diverse amount of flavors. I also call myself a connoisseur of the vape flavors. I’ve tried almost every juice out there on the market, so I can tell if certain juices have similar bases or if they’re using certain types of sweeteners. I really like that, being able to taste all the individual notes of the juice.

Halo: What do you want customers to know about your store?

Josh: We only employ people here at It’s a Dream who are part of the culture. Who vape. Who smoke. Who use glass. And so we’re also very knowledgeable. We can help people with troubleshooting and give them advice. You know, give them strategies versus just selling them stuff and telling them to go home.

People like to come to our store because we’ve built a reputation in the community that we have a knowledgeable staff, we have a friendly staff, and we’re always willing to help you out and cut deals. You know, give you whatever it is that you need and make you walk out feeling happy.

A lot of people will come in with products they’ve bought at other stores and (say), “Hey, I don’t understand anything about this. The guy basically just sold it to me and stopped paying attention to me. Can YOU explain it to (me)?” Even though they didn’t buy it from us, we’ll still try to help them out.

Halo: What’s your customers’ favorite Halo flavor?

Josh: The Tribeca and the Prime 15, people love them. Just depending on what their preference is in tobacco in general, but most places they go, they get tobacco juices that are really cheaply made. They don’t taste like tobacco, or they taste like soap for some reason. A lot of flavors I’ve tried taste like soap. Your guys’ flavors are just really right on, and people absolutely love them. The second they try them they’re like, “Yeah, I’ll buy it.”

Halo: What’s the first/most common question customers ask you?

Josh: We have a huge customer base, people who come here, especially now that we supply a lot of vape stuff, people will come here weekly, and usually the first thing when they come in is, “Where’s your cool new stuff?” People have kind of come to expect that from us. You know, they walk in and we have something cool and new and delicious to show them. That’s usually one of the first things, and where the sales are at, because we always have awesome sales going on.

Halo: Do you vape?

Josh: Oh yes.

Halo: How long have you vaped?

Josh: Two years.

Halo: What does vaping mean to you?

Josh: It’s a little bit of everything. Like I said, I initially started it so that I could quit smoking. So it was like a personal thing, also a money thing. But as I went through and progressed and upgraded and got (into it) more, I kind of turned into a hobbyist. I love trying all the different flavors. I love building coils. Trying out different mods. I do vape tricks, cloud competitions, all kinds of stuff.

Halo: What’s your favorite Halo flavor?

Josh: I actually really love the SubZero. I can take it and mix it with pretty much any juice I want, and, depending on the initial juice, kind of add different variations to it. I can make almost like a tropical drink or I can make something that’s just got that little bite to it. It opens your sinuses! (laughs)
