eVo E-juice Test Results

Vapers today want to feel confident that their E-liquids do not use the flavoring additives diacetyl or acetyl propionyl. Since we reported test results for these flavoring agents in our Halo branded E-liquids in July 2015—indicating detectable amounts in neither—many people asked if we use them in our eVo product line. Today, we are pleased to tell you that tests identical to the rigorous protocols used on the Halo product line show that they are as we have described: diacetyl- and acetyl propionyl–free. Vapers can now rest assured that they will encounter neither of these substances when vaping eVo E-liquids, with or without nicotine.

This is particularly significant for anyone using E-cigarettes in light of the fact that Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos of the Department of Cardiology, Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, in Athens, Greece, detected diacetyl and acetyl propionyl in 74 percent of the 159 E-liquid samples he examined from 36 manufacturers worldwide.

A Harvard University study produced further evidence of vapers’ exposure to these chemicals in the E-cig–E-liquid marketplace. Looking at 51 E-liquid flavors with names they deemed especially appealing to young people, Harvard researchers found diacetyl in 37 of them (72.5 percent) and at least one suspect chemical in 47 of the samples (92.2 percent).

What Are Diacetyl and Acetyl Propionyl?

Diacetyl and acetyl propionyl create a smooth, buttery flavor in food preparations and occur naturally in dairy products and alcoholic drinks. While not harmful to humans when ingested, they are potentially dangerous if their vapors are inhaled.

What Are the Risks?

You may be wondering, “What is the risk?” It’s simple. When inhaled, diacetyl and acetyl propionyl have been known to cause “Popcorn Packers’ Lung Disease,” named by employees at a microwavable popcorn factory where diacetyl and acetyl propionyl were used to instill a buttery flavor and aroma in the popcorn. Throughout the manufacturing process, employees regularly inhaled vapors from chemicals and many developed severe, permanent breathing problems.

Extensive testing of the exposed employees uncovered what became known as “Popcorn Lung” and led Dr. Farsalinos to conclude:

“… there is plenty of reason to think that it (diacetyl) shouldn’t be intentionally added to E-liquid. Acetyl propionyl (AP) is an alternative to diacetyl (DA), but for all intents and purposes, it appears to be just as bad.”

According to a joint study by Dr. Farsalinos in Greece; Penn State University in Media, Pennsylvania; and USAEnthalpy Analytical, a testing laboratory in Durham, North Carolina:

“Exposure to these substances through inhalation causes a decline in respiratory function and the development of a rare clinical syndrome called obliterative bronchiolitis (Popcorn Lung Disease).”

The above joint study concluded, “Proper measures should be taken by E-liquid manufacturers and flavoring suppliers to eliminate these hazards from the products …”

The Nicopure Difference

We are proud of our scientists, chemists, engineers, and technicians who have worked tirelessly to develop great-tasting E-liquids that also eliminate any exposure to diacetyl and acetyl propionyl. As this blog reported in July 2015, “Before we ever even mix a flavor into our base E-liquid, it is sent out for testing via gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. This assures us that our flavorings do not include either diacetyl or acetyl propionyl.”

Nicopure Labs has been following this practice since well before any concerns regarding E-liquid ingredients surfaced in the marketplace. Users of our Halo and eVo E-liquids have never had to be worried about inhaling diacetyl or acetyl propionyl—and they never will.
