Is Cloud Chasing Giving Vaping a Bad Name?
“When automotive manufacturers first started out, they were not thinking about a sport to be called Formula One. You always have groups of people who are looking for excitement.”
— Hon Lik (the inventor of the modern day e-cigarette) on cloud chasing.
The Evolution of Cloud Chasing as a Sport
The art of exhaling massive vape plumes, a.k.a. cloud chasing, is a fast-growing and an emerging sport among e-cigarette devotees. People who watch them are called “cloud gazers.” However, the question at hand is whether onlookers approve or disapprove.
Cloud chasing is said to have first gained traction in the Philippines a few years ago, and rapidly turned into a global phenomenon within the vaping world. There are a number of major cloud chasing competitions. Most notably: The International Cloud Championships in California, and The World Series of Cloud Chasing (W.S.O.C.C.) held this August in the UK. Its participants, called “professional cloud chasers,” can win from a prize pool in excess of $100,000! There are also growing competitions in New Jersey, Illinois, and New Mexico. You may notice more and more of your vape shops getting in the mix with local cloud contests as well.
As explained in an article by Gizmodo, “Cloud chasing competitions are straightforward. Cloud chasers inhale on the devices, which convert e-cigarette “juice” into vapor. They then toast the competition by blowing the biggest, densest vapor cloud possible. In less than two years, the sport has adopted all the trappings of professional athletics. It not only has fans but teams, sponsors, and cash prizes.”
Cloud Chasing In Public
When a vaper makes a grand spectacle by blowing enormous vapor clouds in public, their lack of etiquette may impact the overall reputation of vaping. Given the current state of the industry and its impending regulations, the educated vaper generally understands that cloud chasing in public is not a good look. We all have witnessed the occasional misdirected soul with his or her head in the clouds – literally. You know, “that vaper” blowing ginormous mushroom clouds while at a stop light or “that vaper” at the nearby table, holding an impromptu cloud competition while you attempt to meet your significant other’s family for the first time? Extreme? Certainly. Rare? We hope. Yet, for all of those unintentional cloud gazers affected by “that vaper,” it sends a strong message about e-cigarettes and the thousands of users.
Ron Ward, lawyer for a vape shop in Parkville, Maryland, explains, “If you do blow industrial size clouds of vapor in public, it’s going to ruin it for the rest of us. It’s going to be what they point to when they say these things should be banned indoors….It honestly creates such an immense amount of vapor that it could be offensive to a lot of people. It’s offensive to me, and I’m a vaper.”
It’s All Good
Even though a few cloud chasing drivers and discourteous vapers may impolitely exhale mammoth monsoons of vapor without regard for others, the vast majority will continue to seize every opportunity to be exemplary vaping ambassadors. It’s recommended to cloud chase in the privacy of your home or local vape lounge. Blowing huge clouds in public places may annoy non-smokers and even vapers alike.
Our reasons for vaping may vary, but at the end of the day, we all want to vape in peace. In order to maintain our vaping rights, just be cognizant of your surroundings and the “vapor gods” will be generous!
