8 Ways to Enhance Your E-Liquid’s Flavor

A vast world of mouthwatering e-liquid flavors is out there. Some provide massive clouds and others an intense throat hit, but at the end of the day, let’s be real, we vape for the taste. Vaping isn’t nearly as enjoyable when an e-liquid lacks flavor, but there are ways to ensure you get the most out of every vape:

1) Reduce Your Nicotine Level

Nicotine is known to have its own unique taste. The higher the level of nicotine, the more likely it is to drown out the flavors. Increased nicotine also creates a harsher throat hit, forcing shorter drags and less flavor from each pull. If you’re looking to enhance the flavor, definitely consider lowering your nicotine levels. Ultimately, it comes down to preference, and there’s a sweet spot for every e-liquid that’s waiting to be found.

2) Use More PG

The propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) ratio of e-liquid can greatly affect the flavor. PG is a thin, clear, and tasteless ingredient. The properties of PG allow the flavors of the e-liquid to be more pronounced; PG carries flavors well. On the other hand, VG is  sweeter, making it difficult to capture the authentic taste.

3) Let It Steep

The steeping process allows all of the ingredients to harmoniously blend together. Although some e-liquids may take up to two months to reveal the true flavor, the recommended steeping time for e-liquid is a minimum of two weeks.

In order to steep your e-liquid, the bottle must sit in a cool, dark area. To speed up the process, shake the bottle and then open it to allow it to breathe daily. Test the flavor every two weeks to monitor the outcome. Shaking up your bottle for 15–30 seconds every time before using can also help make sure that the flavors are distributed evenly.

4) Prevent Degradation

Ingredient degradation can also be a key factor affecting the loss of flavor. It usually occurs over time but can be accelerated based on the manner in which the e-liquids are stored. Many e-liquids have an estimated expiration date of one to two years after they are made, but a loss of flavor may be noticeable as soon as six to twelve months. Just as in the steeping process, storing e-liquids away from the sun or any other steady source of heat is the best way to prevent them from expiring prematurely. With proper storage, it’s possible to preserve the flavor well beyond a year.

5) Consider Sub-Ohming

Sub-ohming is vaping from an atomizer with a coil that registers below one ohm of electrical resistance. Sub-ohming tends to provide more flavor because it usually requires a coil-build that uses a larger wire gauge. More wire equals extra surface area, which means a greater amount of E-liquid is being vaporized. Sub-ohming also calls for higher wattage to cover the broader surface area, creating generous amounts of vapor and producing a high concentration of flavor. Sub-ohming consumes more E-liquid, but also provides optimal flavor.

6) Add Coils

Adding coils is a direct way of expanding surface area to your atomizer. There is more e-liquid in contact with the coils in a dual-coil atomizer which enhances the vapor and flavor. Keep in mind, just like sub-ohming, you’ll need a higher wattage for dual coils which may require a stronger device. Running at a higher wattage will also drain batteries more quickly.

7) Increase Airflow

Manufacturers design atomizers for two purposes: to increase vapor production and enhance flavor. An atomizer that directs airflow to the coils will undoubtedly heighten the taste of the e-liquid. For ideal results, it’s best to let the airflow come from behind or beneath the coils leading straight to the drip tip.

8) Go With Glass Tanks

The quality of your tank can directly impact the taste of your e-liquid. Vaping with a glass tank is another way to maximize your experience, whereas plastic tanks can slightly reduce flavor.

Trial & Error

A number of adjustments can be made to achieve prime flavor production from your e-liquid, but prepare to make some sacrifices. For instance, switching to an e-liquid with a higher PG ratio may provide more flavor, but will compromise its vapor production creating a harsher throat hit. In the end, it’s all about deciding what arrangement works best for you and finding that middle ground.
