10 or So Must-Know Facts About EDC

10 or So Must-Know Facts About EDC

It’s a massive electronic dance music festival. It’s a circus. It’s a carnival. EDC is like Cirque du Soleil on steroids. (It’s definitely on something.) This year the world’s largest outdoor rave runs June 16 through 18 in Las Vegas.

Expect nine stages with musical artists pumping out endless jams, carnival rides, outrageously original costumes, dazzling lights and lasers, fireworks … sensory overload! And that’s exactly why we love it.

Here are a few things you should know before heading to EDC:

WTF Is EDC?

EDC might sound like some government agency, but it stands for “Electric Daisy Carnival.” The event dates to the ‘90s, but got huge around 2008. EDC is based in Las Vegas, and takes place every year in cities around the world.

Move Your Body

EDC is where the music’s always thumpin’ and everyone’s jumpin’ and bumpin’. Trance, techno, bounce, house … The full spectrum of electronic dance music will be represented by dozens of DJs, including Marshmello, who seems to be everywhere, like Coachella, Indy, and Bonnaroo. Get the complete music lineup now.

Be Prepared to Salute

The freak flag always flies high at EDC. Relax, it’s a label they embrace. Acrobats, dancers, circus folk, and other performers make up EDC’s own Funkdafied Freaks. We’d say keep an eye out for them, but you can’t miss ‘em!

Put on Your Dancing Shoes, and Remember They’re Also Your Walking Shoes

The EDC grounds are immense; they practically have their own zip code. Since there’s so much to do, you’ll be walking around a lot. Fitbits will be working overtime. Try to pick footwear that’s both comfortable and stylish.

Leave Your Clown Phobia at Home

Clowns are everywhere at EDC, even among the featured performers. These ones are more surreal than scary, though. Not to worry — Pennywise won’t be there. Or will he? (Maniacal laughter comes from behind you.)

Look Out for Love

While the sight of someone down on one or more knees isn’t unusual at EDC (some overdo the food, drink, rides, dancing, fill in the blank), don’t be surprised if you see a few marriage proposals. Some attendees actually tie the knot during the event! Hey, it’s Vegas after all.

Tote Your Totem

EDC draws a BIG crowd — 100K+ per day — which can make keeping up with your squad tricky. Totems are a great way to stay connected and share your creativity and humor. Put a sign, photo, stuffed animal, or something else nonthreatening on a stick and raise it high. Some attendees put a lot of thought and effort into this, making totem-watching part of the fun of EDC. If you bring a totem, make sure it’s unique and easy to spot. And no more than 10 feet tall!

Vape Away

E-cigarettes are welcome! The EDC folks do ask that you arrive with your tank empty and fill it with juice once you’re inside. Keep your bottles (plastic only) sealed until then.

Don’t Forget Stuff in Your Car (Including People)

Once you’re inside the festival grounds, be prepared to stay, because even though it’s Sin City, “ins-and-outs are not allowed,” to quote the EDC website. Also, don’t sleep in your car overnight, because you will wake up in an impound lot.

Keep Hope Alive

EDC will have a live stream available. There’s also a 3-D documentary film called “EDC 2013: Under the Electric Sky.” If you can’t make it this year, you may want to check these out.

EDC is an experience you’ll never forget. Get ready to have your mind blown!
